I ask this seriously. If the purpose of a debt ceiling is to serve as any sort of deterrent for racking up spending should there not be a serious threat of not raising it to cause someone to think twice about hitting the debt limit. I understand that there would be consequences for not raising it, but we need to pass a bill prioritizing our spending according to that which would have the most effect on us, and at least shut down the government for a week, or it will never change anything and we might as well just eliminate the debt ceiling altogether as it will serve absolutely no purpose.
